Have you ever visited Las Vegas from Canada? If not, step into the Flamingo Casino hotel when you do and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another universe. The size of the Flamingo Casino spans across 40 acres belonging to one of Las Vegas’s first settlers, Charles “Pop” Skuires. Mr. Skuires paid more than $8.75 an acre for the land. In 1944, Margaret Folsom bought the area of land for $7,500 from Skuires and later sold it to Billy Wilkerson.

Billy Wilkerson was the owner of the “Hollywood Reporter” and several famous night clubs on Sunset Boulevard such as “Trocadero Café”, “Circo” and “La Rue’s”.

In 1945, Wilkerson bought 33 acres of land on the western side of the 91st road. He took George Vernon with him to design the hotel, which later became a European-style casino as well. His plan was for a hotel with luxurious rooms, health club, spa, night clubs and golf clubs; however, due to financial hardships he couldn’t raise the $400,000 he needed and gave up on the idea.

After Wilkerson retired the idea, one of the most notorious mobsters of the time, Bugsey Siegel, took over the place. He and his partners arrived in Vegas and took charge of the project. Siegel’s problem was that he had no clue about construction or design. He had to purchase material out of his own pocket a few times, as the first supplies were simply stolen. Siegel lost his patience as a result of all the costs and began fighting with the builders.

By the end of December, the Flamingo hotel and casino were ready and attracted many passers-by who were very impressed by its size and luxurious accommodation. All games arrived later on as well, along with the slot machines, Blackjack, Roulette and poker. Since then, people have come from as far as Canada to enjoy the casino and the games available there.
